YWCA hosts panel of experts to discuss race and homelessness in Seattle

Stand Against Racism – Homelessness: Moving Beyond Barriers, May 19

SEATTLE, WA – Join YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish at Seattle City Hall for the organization’s 7th annual Stand Against Racism, themed Homelessness: Moving Beyond Barriers, featuring keynote speaker Donna M. Beegle, Ed.D.

Founder and president of Communication Across Barriers , Dr. Beegle inspires and educates individuals, organizations, politicians, and entire communities with proven models that better outcomes for people living in poverty. Having grown up in generational poverty, Dr. Beegle has devoted her career to eliminating it. “Poverty is resolvable; however, making a difference for people who live in the crisis of poverty requires a paradigm shift.”

She will be joined by a panel of experts to talk about the ways race, gender, sexual orientation, and class impact people who experience homelessness. The event will explore how policy has increased homelessness at the national and local level, what the current strategies are for ending homelessness, and what innovative and collaborative thinking can guide us moving forward.  Attendees will also be led in taking the pledge to join YWCA in standing against racism.

Stand Against Racism is a campaign of YWCA USA to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional and structural racism in our communities.

This event is presented by YWCA’s People of Color Executive Council and City of Seattle’s Human Services Department and Office for Civil Rights.
